Work History
From our humble beginnings...
H Harding & Son Ltd was founded by a father and son team in Toronto in 1927 as a small job print business with a foot pedal operated printing press. Both were previously employed with major paper box manufacturing companies as managers.
During World War II, with one partner overseas, HH&S was pressed into service diecutting shell waddings for the war effort while laminating and die cutting cardboard toys and cutout books for children, printing and typesetting on letterpress.
After the war HH&S started a second company, Harwood Photomount Specialties. The main focus for this operation included diecutting , printing, assembling and marketing photomounts for Kodak, as well as wedding and family portraiture and albums.
In late 1950s, after steady growth in '40s and early '50s, HH&S partnered with Koenig and Bauer of Germany to bring sheet fed rotogravure printing to Canada. For a period of 10 years, HH&S was responsible for manufacturing cartons for P&G and catalogs for Case Equipment under the name of Harding Trini Gravure.
At the completion of this partnership with Koenig and Bauer in 1969, HH&S, using its much diversified experience, began its transition from being a primary manufacturer to being a trade finisher. HH&S developed its new niche by designing for advertising agencies and large commercial printers and supplying cardboard and corrugated displays used in food, cigarette, household product, and confectionery goods applications.
In the 1970s, the company grew to prominence as the premier trade finisher to the Canadian point-of-purchase advertising industry providing instant innovative display solutions and working with printers, screeners, and co-packaging companies. Remember the ESSO Oil Put a Tiger in your Tank promotion? This was one of HH&S's high profile marketing projects of the period which remains in the minds of consumers today - almost 40 years later!
In the 1980s, HH&S changed its name to Harding Display Corporation and shifted towards being a prime supplier of display materials to the National advertisers, growing stronger in all aspects of display manufacturing - acrylic and plastic vac-forming, woodworking, metal, corrugated, and printing jobs in lithography and silkscreen generated by a dynamic fast response design team and knowledgeable sales team.
The 1990s saw the growth of co-packaging for gum and cough and cold products directly into displays produced in plant, large permanent displays for the paint industry, and the beginnings of the design and manufacturing of pallet displays and co-packing the product.
The introduction and working with data asset management, incorporating digital printing, and IT design management in the years since 2000 has brought HDC to the forefront of display services to the retail industry through its partnership with many large national corporations.
